Hello, I am Doug Watkins, Chief Executive of EastAsian-Australasian Flyway Partnership. Secretariat. The Flyway extends fromAlaska and Russia in the north, southwards through EastAsia and South-eastAsia, toAustralia and New Zealand in the south and encompasses 22 countries.
The Flyway Partnership was launched in 2006 and now consists of 18 National Governments, 6 Inter-Governmental Organizations, 13 International Non-Governmental Organizations, 1 International Organization and 1 International Private Enterprise. (Rio Tinto). The Partnership has now developed a network of 152 internationally important wetlands for migratory waterbird across the Flyway.
Where the sea meets land, they merge together as coastal wetlands. Wetlands are incredibly important for people and biodiversity. These wetlands are threatened by a range of issues, including climate change. Wetlands play a crucial role in sustaining life on our planet. They contribute to our well-being. These wetlands have high biodiversity, and we can see many migratory waterbirds feeding and resting on the Incheon Songdo Tidal Flat. Each year these tidal flats support over 20,000 migratory waterbirds . especially during southward and northward migration.
More broadly, billions of people depend on wetlands. Wetlands provide livelihoods for coastal communities and also protect coastal villages from serious storm events.
However, we’ve lost large areas of wetlands in Korea and also more broadly in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Protecting wetlands will mitigate the impacts of climate change. Coastal wetlands are powerful nature-based solutions for climate change. Nature based solutions like wetlands are one of the most effective ways to tackle climate change.
I encourage governments, businesses, and civil societies to join the global action for people and nature. We need the will and action. I hope this Global ESG management Forum will mobilize and scale up international actions especially from business -to protect, manage and restore wetlands to mitigate the impact of climate change . for people and the broader biodiversity.
